Alarm design for Islington properties

Few boroughs pack so many building types into so little space. Islington has early nineteenth-century terraces with lower-ground floors, tall Victorian houses split into flats, large council estates, mansion blocks near Highbury Fields and converted industrial buildings around Clerkenwell. The number of floors, how the basement is reached and whether the front door is shared all change where detectors need to go.

Georgian terraces

Georgian and early Victorian terraces in Barnsbury, Canonbury and Angel

These houses usually have a lower-ground floor with a front lightwell, a rear garden door and tall sash windows. The lower ground is often the most exposed level, so it gets motion cover and contacts on its front and rear doors. Wireless devices avoid chasing cables through original plaster and shutters.

  • Lightwell doors and vault doors fitted with contacts
  • Shock sensors on lower-ground and ground-floor sashes
  • Discreet wireless detectors that suit period interiors
Converted flats

Victorian house conversions in Highbury, Holloway and Tufnell Park

Many streets off Holloway Road and around Highbury are lined with houses divided into two or three flats. Each flat gets its own compact wireless system covering its entrance door and main rooms. Garden flats with a rear door or patio get extra attention, as that door is often out of sight from the street.

  • Separate system per flat, controlled from each owner's phone
  • Garden flat rear doors and patio windows covered
  • No external siren without the freeholder's agreement
Warehouse lofts

Converted warehouses and lofts in Clerkenwell

Open-plan loft apartments and live-work units around Clerkenwell and the EC1 side of the borough have large windows, high ceilings and sometimes a private roof terrace. Detectors are chosen for the ceiling height and angled to cover a big single space, with contacts on terrace doors and any secondary access.

Shops and studios

Shops, cafes and studios on Upper Street and Holloway Road

Small commercial units have a shop front, a rear or yard door and often a storeroom or basement. The alarm is designed so staff can arm and disarm by app or keypad, with separate areas for the stockroom or office. Opening and closing alerts on the owner's phone show when the premises were secured.

  • Separate areas for shop floor, stockroom and office
  • Arming and disarming logged with user names on the app
  • Optional professional monitoring for out-of-hours alerts

Islington has a large number of conservation areas and many listed terraces, so listed building consent may be needed before a bell box or other device is fixed to the outside of a listed house.

FAQs

Burglar alarms in Islington: your questions answered

How do you protect the lower-ground floor of a Barnsbury or Canonbury house?

The lower ground is often reached from a front lightwell and may have vault doors under the pavement. We fit contacts on every lower-ground door, motion detection in each room and, where the windows face the lightwell, shock sensors on the glass. That level can then be armed on its own at night while you sleep upstairs.

I own a flat in a converted house in Holloway. Can I fit an alarm?

Yes. A compact wireless alarm inside your own flat normally needs no building work and leaves the shared hallway untouched. If you want an external siren on the front of the house, the freeholder or managing agent has to agree first. Most flat owners use an internal siren with alerts sent straight to their phone instead.

Will alarm detectors spoil the look of my period home in Islington?

Modern wireless detectors are small, white or black, and fix with minimal screws, so there is no cable to chase into plaster or cornicing. We position them in corners where they are least noticeable while still covering the room properly. Door contacts can usually be fitted on the hinge-free side of the frame, out of the main sightline.

Can the alarm in my Upper Street shop tell me who set and unset it?

Yes. Each member of staff gets their own app login or keypad code, so the event log shows who armed or disarmed the system and when. You can receive a notification on your phone each time the shop is closed up, and you can arm it remotely if someone forgets.

How much does a burglar alarm cost in Islington?

Every system is priced after a free survey, with a written quote before any work starts. Your exact price depends on the number of doors, windows and rooms, and is confirmed in writing after a free survey.

Wired or wireless — which is right for my home?

If your home is finished and lived in, wireless is usually best: no chasing walls, no redecorating, and most homes are done in a day. If you are renovating, a wired system run at first fix before plastering is the better long-term choice, installed at second fix once decorating is done.

Can you take over or upgrade my existing alarm?

Usually, yes — including systems we did not install. Where the existing wiring and detectors prove sound we keep them and replace the panel and keypad, which costs far less than a new system and can add smartphone control.

What guarantee do I get?

A 12-month guarantee on our installation work, alongside the manufacturer's warranty on the equipment we supply. You also receive a completion certificate for your records.
