Alarm design for Newham properties

Much of Newham was built as Victorian and Edwardian terraced streets, many now extended at the rear or into the loft, and some split into flats. The south and west have changed fast, with large apartment developments around Stratford, Canning Town and the Royal Docks, while Beckton has newer houses with driveways and garages. Each needs a different balance of contacts and detectors.

Victorian terraces

Terraced houses in Forest Gate, East Ham and Manor Park

Typical terraces have a bay-fronted lounge, a back addition, a rear kitchen extension and often a loft conversion. A wireless system is fitted in a day: contacts on front and back doors, motion detection in each ground-floor room, and cover for any bedroom over a flat-roofed extension.

  • Rear extension doors and rooflights included
  • Bedroom above a flat roof protected
  • Loft rooms left free in the night setting
New apartments

Apartments in Stratford, East Village and the Royal Docks

Newer developments have controlled entry, concierge desks in some blocks and balconies or terraces. A compact flat alarm covers your front door, living space and balcony door. External sirens or fixings on the building need the managing agent's agreement, so an internal siren with phone alerts is usual.

  • Front door and balcony door fitted with contacts
  • Compact wireless kit with no external fixings
  • Alerts to your phone and anyone you choose
Modern houses

Newer houses with driveways in Beckton and Custom House

Houses built from the 1980s onwards often have an integral garage, a garden door and a front door close to the drive. The garage internal door and any up-and-over door get contacts, the ground floor gets motion cover, and pet-tolerant detectors are used where pets roam downstairs.

Shops and businesses

Shops and units on Green Street, High Street North and in Stratford

Busy shopping streets have small retail units with a shop front, a rear door to a yard or service road and a stockroom. The alarm is split into areas so staff can arm the stockroom separately, and each user has their own code or app login for a clear record of who opened and closed.

  • Shop floor, stockroom and office as separate areas
  • Individual staff codes for a clear event log
  • Optional monitoring for alerts outside opening hours

Newham has a small number of conservation areas, including the Woodgrange Estate in Forest Gate, where restrictions on front elevations may apply, so a front-mounted bell box is worth checking with the council first.

FAQs

Burglar alarms in Newham: your questions answered

My East Ham terrace has a loft conversion and rear extension. How is the alarm planned?

The ground floor, including the extension and any rooflights, is protected with door contacts and motion detection. A bedroom above a flat-roofed section is added too. The loft room and other bedrooms are normally left out of the night setting, so you can arm the downstairs before bed and still move freely upstairs.

Can I fit an alarm in my Stratford apartment if I rent it?

You will need your landlord's permission, and the landlord may need the managing agent's agreement for anything outside the flat. A wireless system is a good fit for renters because it uses small fixings, needs no cabling and can be removed with minimal making good when you move. All devices stay inside your flat.

Does a Green Street shop need a different alarm from a home?

The equipment is similar, but the design differs. Shops need separate areas for the sales floor, stockroom and office, individual codes for each member of staff and a clear log of opening and closing times. Contacts go on the shop door, rear yard door and shutters where suitable, with alerts sent to the owner's phone.

Can the alarm cover the integral garage in my Beckton house?

Yes. Integral garages often have a door straight into the house, so both the internal door and the main garage door get contacts, and a detector covers the garage itself. If you use the garage regularly, it can be set as a separate area so you can open it without disarming the rest of the house.

How much does a burglar alarm cost in Newham?

A wireless Ajax alarm starts from £995 including VAT, a wired or hybrid system from £1,995 including VAT, and upgrading an old panel while keeping your existing wired sensors from £495 + VAT. Your exact price depends on the number of doors, windows and rooms, and is fixed in writing after a free survey.

Wired or wireless — which is right for my home?

If your home is finished and lived in, wireless is usually best: no chasing walls, no redecorating, and most homes are done in a day. If you are renovating, a wired system run at first fix before plastering is the better long-term choice, installed at second fix once decorating is done.

Can you take over or upgrade my existing alarm?

Usually, yes — including systems we did not install. Where the existing wiring and detectors prove sound we keep them and replace the panel and keypad, which costs far less than a new system and can add smartphone control.

What guarantee do I get?

A 12-month guarantee on our installation work, alongside the manufacturer's warranty on the equipment we supply. You also receive a completion certificate for your records.
