Alarm design for Hammersmith & Fulham properties

Much of the borough is tightly packed period housing that has been extended in every direction: basements with lightwells below, side returns behind and dormer lofts above. Alongside the terraces are red-brick mansion flats, post-war estates around White City and new riverside blocks. Each layout creates different entry points, so the detector plan is drawn room by room.

Fulham terraces

Terraced houses in Parsons Green, Sands End and Hurlingham

Typical two-storey terraces, many with a glass-roofed side return and bifold doors across the back. Wide glazed openings are the main weak point, so they get contacts and, for higher protection, shock sensors. In a finished home a wireless Ajax system avoids lifting floors or disturbing fresh decoration.

  • Contacts and shock sensors on bifold and sliding doors
  • Motion detection across the open-plan kitchen and side return
  • Pet-tolerant detectors where a dog has the run of downstairs
Basements

Basement extensions in Fulham and Ravenscourt Park

A dug-out basement adds a new level with its own lightwell, glazing and sometimes a garden door. Lightwells sit below street level and can be reached from the front garden, so the basement is treated as a ground floor in its own right. If the basement is still being built, a wired system is cabled at first fix.

  • Contacts on lightwell doors and opening windows
  • Detection in each basement room, including media and utility rooms
  • Cable routes agreed with the builder before plastering
Mansion flats

Mansion blocks in Barons Court, West Kensington and Brook Green

Red-brick mansion flats tend to have a single front door off a communal stair and tall windows overlooking the street or a rear courtyard. A compact wireless kit suits them, with a contact on the entrance door and motion detection in the hall and reception rooms. External sirens need the managing agent's agreement.

Shops & estates

Shops on King Street, North End Road and Uxbridge Road

High street units in Hammersmith, Fulham and Shepherd's Bush need simple setting for staff, shutter contacts and detection covering the stockroom and rear service door. Flats on the borough's estates, from White City to the Clem Attlee estate, usually suit a wireless kit fitted inside the flat with alerts to your phone.

A large share of Hammersmith & Fulham lies within conservation areas, and if your property is listed, listed building consent is needed before anything is fixed to it.

FAQs

Burglar alarms in Hammersmith & Fulham: your questions answered

Our Fulham basement has a lightwell at the front. How is that protected?

The lightwell is treated like a back door, because it can be reached from the front garden and is partly hidden from the street. Opening windows and any door into the lightwell get contacts, and the rooms behind them get motion detectors. Fixed glazing that cannot open can have a shock sensor if you want earlier warning of an attempt.

Can I alarm a mansion flat in Barons Court if the freeholder will not allow an external siren?

Yes. The system works entirely inside the flat, with an indoor siren loud enough to unsettle an intruder and instant alerts to your phone. Leaving out the external bell box keeps you within the terms most managing agents set. If you want someone watching alerts while you are away, professional monitoring is available as an option.

Our dog sleeps in the side-return kitchen of our Hammersmith terrace. Will it set the alarm off?

Not with the right detectors. We fit pet-tolerant motion detectors, designed to ignore an animal up to a set size, and mount them where the dog cannot climb close to the lens. The bifold and back doors still have contacts, so the kitchen stays protected while the dog is in it.

We are adding a dormer loft and a basement to our Fulham house. Wired or wireless?

With work that extensive, wired is usually the better choice. Cables are run at first fix while walls and ceilings are open, then the panel, keypad and detectors go in at second fix towards the end of the build. Loft roof windows can be covered too if they are reachable from a neighbouring roof or a rear extension.

How much does a burglar alarm cost in Hammersmith & Fulham?

A wireless Ajax alarm starts from £995 including VAT, a wired or hybrid system from £1,995 including VAT, and upgrading an old panel while keeping your existing wired sensors from £495 + VAT. Your exact price depends on the number of doors, windows and rooms, and is fixed in writing after a free survey.

Wired or wireless — which is right for my home?

If your home is finished and lived in, wireless is usually best: no chasing walls, no redecorating, and most homes are done in a day. If you are renovating, a wired system run at first fix before plastering is the better long-term choice, installed at second fix once decorating is done.

Can you take over or upgrade my existing alarm?

Usually, yes — including systems we did not install. Where the existing wiring and detectors prove sound we keep them and replace the panel and keypad, which costs far less than a new system and can add smartphone control.

What guarantee do I get?

A 12-month guarantee on our installation work, alongside the manufacturer's warranty on the equipment we supply. You also receive a completion certificate for your records.
