What is an Ajax alarm system?

Ajax is Europe’s most-awarded wireless security system, designed by Ajax Systems and used in over 169 countries. It combines a smart hub, encrypted wireless detectors, and a free app into one professional-grade alarm — without the wires, the keypad clutter, or the monthly contract lock-in.

Ajax is a wireless intruder alarm system built around a central hub that communicates with detectors using the proprietary Jeweller radio protocol. It supports door contacts, motion sensors, photo-verification cameras (MotionCam), smoke and heat detectors (FireProtect 2), keypads, key fobs and outdoor sirens. The system is certified to BS EN 50131 Grade 2 and is suitable for UK home insurance compliance and for most commercial applications.

Ajax Systems was founded in 2011 and has won iF Design, Red Dot and Detektor International awards for its products. The system is professionally installed across the UK by accredited engineers — DIY installation is discouraged because device positioning, signal verification and Grade 2 compliance documentation all require trained survey work.

Three things separate Ajax from older wireless alarms (such as Visonic PowerMax or earlier Pyronix Enforcer):

  • Two-way encrypted radio — every device confirms receipt of every signal, and the hub knows immediately if any sensor goes offline (typically within 36 seconds).
  • Photo verification — MotionCam sensors capture animated photo sequences when triggered, allowing alarm verification before police response. This dramatically reduces false dispatches.
  • One free app for life — full system control with no subscription, supporting unlimited users with custom permissions (handy for letting a cleaner in only on Tuesdays).

Ajax Jeweller — the wireless protocol that makes it work

Jeweller is Ajax Systems’ proprietary two-way encrypted wireless protocol connecting the hub to every detector. It operates in the licence-free 868 MHz band, hops between frequencies to resist jamming, and supports a range of up to 2,000 metres in open space (typically 200 to 400 metres through brick walls and floors). Every device polls the hub every 12 to 36 seconds, so the system knows within half a minute if any sensor stops responding.

Jeweller is the technology that makes Ajax materially different from older wireless alarms. Most pre-2015 wireless systems used one-way 433 MHz radio — a sensor would shout into the void hoping the panel was listening. If a sensor’s battery died, you wouldn’t know until you tested it. With Jeweller, every signal is acknowledged. Every device’s status is monitored. If anything goes wrong, the app pings you immediately.

Jeweller — key technical specifications

SpecificationValue
Frequency band868.0–868.6 MHz (UK / EU licence-free)
CommunicationTwo-way, encrypted (AES-256-style block cipher)
Maximum open-space range2,000 m (Hub 2 Plus to detector)
Typical in-building range200–400 m through walls / floors
Polling interval12, 24, or 36 seconds (configurable)
Frequency hoppingYes — automatic on interference detection
Anti-jamming detectionYes — alerts on app within seconds
Maximum devices per hub200 (Hub 2 Plus / Hub Hybrid 2G/4G)

Ajax’s second protocol, Wings, runs alongside Jeweller specifically to transmit MotionCam photo sequences. Wings uses a higher data-rate channel and dedicated antenna so images arrive reliably even when the main alarm channel is busy. Both protocols run on the same hub, the same battery and the same encrypted infrastructure.

Wireless or wired Ajax — which setup is right for you?

Ajax sells the same alarm in three configurations: pure wireless (Hub 2 / Hub 2 Plus + Jeweller sensors), pure wired (Hub Hybrid + Fibra devices), or hybrid (Hub Hybrid running both protocols on one panel). For most London homes, pure wireless is the right choice — it installs in 4 to 5 hours, leaves no cable damage, and is fully BS EN 50131 Grade 2 certified. Wired Fibra makes sense for new builds, commercial sites, or properties over roughly 4,000 sq ft. The hybrid approach lets you wire the perimeter and drop wireless sensors into rooms that don’t justify cable runs.

Below is a side-by-side decision matrix to help you pick the right Ajax setup before requesting a quote.

Most homes — fastest install

Ajax wireless alarm

The default for residential installations across London. Uses the Jeweller wireless protocol (868 MHz, encrypted, two-way) between hub and detectors.

  • 4–5 hour install in a 3-bed home
  • No cable chasing, no plaster damage
  • 7-year sensor batteries
  • BS EN 50131 Grade 2 certified
  • Hub 2, Hub 2 Plus, or Hub Hybrid
  • Range up to 2,000 m open / 200–400 m through walls
Best for: 1–4 bedroom homes, retrofits in occupied properties, anyone who wants a clean install in a single day.
Commercial & new build

Ajax wired alarm (Fibra)

Hardwired bus protocol using standard 4-core alarm cable. Power and data on the same cable, runs up to 2,000 metres per branch, no radio interference.

Typical 3-bed price £995–£1,495 £1,995–£2,800
Best fit Retrofits, residential New builds, commercial

Hybrid — when you want both

Ajax Hub Hybrid runs Fibra and Jeweller on the same panel. In practice this means you can wire the perimeter of a building (front and back doors, garage, perimeter PIRs) for tamper resistance, then drop wireless sensors into upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms without cable. SatFocus designs hybrid installations for London properties where part of the building is a recent extension or refurbishment (cable already accessible) and the rest is original (where chasing walls would damage finishes).

For a hybrid quote, we run a paid 90-minute commercial-grade survey before quoting because the cable routes need plotting on a floor plan first.

Ajax Fibra — hardwired Ajax for commercial & new builds

Ajax Fibra is the manufacturer’s hardwired bus protocol for use with the Ajax Hub Hybrid panel. Fibra supports cable runs up to 2,000 metres per branch with up to 100 wired devices on a single hub. It uses standard 4-core unscreened alarm cable and provides the tamper resistance and zero-radio-interference characteristics demanded by commercial properties, new builds, and BS EN 50131 Grade 3 installations.

Most London homes use the wireless Jeweller protocol because it installs faster, looks cleaner, and avoids chasing cable through plaster. But there are cases where wired Fibra is genuinely the better engineering choice:

  • New builds and major refurbishments — cable can be installed during first-fix at minimal extra cost.
  • Commercial premises — warehouses, retail units, offices where insurance demands Grade 3.
  • Listed buildings with thick walls — where wireless signal struggles or where surface-mounted sensors aren’t permitted.
  • Properties over ~4,000 sq ft — long Fibra cable runs are simpler than wireless repeaters.
  • Sites with heavy radio interference — adjacent to radio masts, broadcast equipment, or industrial RF.

The neat part: Ajax Hub Hybrid runs Fibra and Jeweller on the same hub. You can wire the perimeter of a commercial unit on Fibra for tamper resistance, then drop wireless MotionCam photo-verification cameras into the office area without pulling more cable. One panel, one app, two protocols.

SatFocus designs and installs Ajax Fibra installations across London and the Home Counties. Fibra projects start with a paid commercial site survey because cable routes need to be assessed before quoting accurately.

Ajax fire alarm & FireProtect 2 — the same app, the whole risk

Ajax fire detection extends the same hub and the same app to smoke, heat and carbon monoxide protection. FireProtect 2 is a wireless detector with two infrared smoke sensors, a built-in 85 dB sounder, and either heat-only or smoke + heat + CO variants. Detectors are individually addressable, sound an interconnected alarm across every device on the hub, and notify your phone within seconds.

Until recently you had two separate systems for fire and intrusion — a Hispec or Aico smoke chain wired into the lighting circuit, and a separate intruder panel. Ajax replaces both. The integration matters because:

  • One verification channel. A FireProtect 2 alarm at 03:00 sends a push notification to every user on the Ajax app within seconds — and shows you exactly which detector triggered.
  • Heat-only variants for kitchens and bathrooms (where steam routinely false-triggers smoke detectors).
  • Carbon monoxide detection on the same device — required by Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm regulations for many rentals.
  • Interconnected sounders. When one detector triggers, every detector on the hub sounds — so a kitchen fire wakes the upstairs bedrooms.
  • Tamper, low battery and offline alerts all flow through the same app you already use for the burglar alarm.

FireProtect 2 detectors are EN 14604 (smoke) and EN 50291 (CO) certified. SatFocus typically pairs four to six FireProtect 2 detectors with a standard Ajax intruder install — one in each bedroom, one in the upstairs hallway, one in the kitchen (heat variant), and one near any boiler or fireplace (smoke + CO variant).

Switching from Verisure, ADT or a bell-only alarm

SatFocus regularly replaces Verisure and ADT rental contracts with owned Ajax systems. Verisure and ADT systems are typically locked to their own monitoring contracts at £30–£50 per month. Once you switch to Ajax you own the hardware outright, the app is free for life, and optional 24/7 ARC monitoring through a third party costs roughly £15–£20 per month. The old system is removed and the new Ajax kit installed in a single visit.

Replacing Verisure

Verisure systems are leased — you don’t own the kit. Cancellation typically requires 30 days’ notice. We install Ajax around your existing system, then switch over and remove the old hardware on the changeover date. No service gap.

Replacing ADT

ADT alarms are usually older Visonic PowerMax or Honeywell hardware on a fixed monitoring contract. We can usually leave existing wired siren cables in place and reuse them, reducing install time and cost.

Upgrading bell-only systems

If your current alarm just makes noise without notifying anyone, you have a 1990s system. Most modern insurers won’t recognise it for premium discounts. Ajax with 4G backup brings you to current standard for under £1,500.

Most replacements are completed in a single 4–6 hour visit. We’ll confirm the changeover date with you in advance, run both systems briefly in parallel during testing, and decommission the old equipment cleanly. You’ll have a written compliance certificate on the day.

How we install your Ajax alarm system

A documented six-step process — from your initial enquiry to handover and compliance certificate. Total elapsed time from booking to live system is typically 5 to 10 working days.

Ajax alarm system — frequently asked questions

Plain-English answers to the questions Londoners actually ask before installing Ajax. Each answer is structured for direct extraction by AI search engines and voice assistants.

Should I choose wireless or wired Ajax for my home?

For most London homes, wireless Ajax (Hub 2 or Hub 2 Plus with the Jeweller protocol) is the right choice. It installs in a single 4–5 hour visit, leaves no plaster damage, and is fully BS EN 50131 Grade 2 certified — the standard insurers require.

Choose wired Fibra (Hub Hybrid panel) when you have a new build during first-fix, a commercial property, a listed building, or a property over roughly 4,000 sq ft. The hybrid option lets you wire the perimeter and drop wireless sensors into other rooms.

A typical wireless 3-bed install is £995 to £1,495; the equivalent wired Fibra install is £1,995 to £2,800.

Does Ajax integrate with Home Assistant, Alexa or Google Home?

Yes. Ajax integrates with Home Assistant via the official Ajax Cloud API integration, allowing arm/disarm scenarios, sensor states, and event triggers in Home Assistant automations. Amazon Alexa and Google Home are supported through the Ajax Translator hub for voice control of arm and disarm commands. Apple HomeKit is not supported natively.

Most SatFocus customers use the free Ajax app directly rather than third-party integrations — it is faster, more secure, and provides photo verification natively. Smart-home integration is a bonus, not a replacement.

How much does an Ajax alarm system cost installed in London?

Professional Ajax alarm installation across London costs between £995 and £3,000 depending on property size and components. A typical 3-bedroom home with Ajax Hub 2 Plus, four motion sensors, four door contacts, an outdoor siren and a keypad costs around £1,495 inc VAT. Larger homes with photo verification (MotionCam) and fire detection (FireProtect 2) typically run £1,995 to £2,500. Commercial sites or hybrid wired/wireless installations using Ajax Fibra are quoted individually following a free site survey.

What is the Ajax Jeweller protocol?

Jeweller is Ajax Systems’ proprietary two-way encrypted wireless protocol used between the hub and detectors. It operates in the 868 MHz licence-free band, hops frequencies to resist jamming, and provides a range of up to 2,000 metres in open space (typically 200–400 metres through walls). Each device exchanges status messages with the hub every 12 to 36 seconds, so any sensor that goes offline is detected immediately. Jeweller is one of two Ajax radio protocols — the other is Wings, used for transmitting MotionCam photos.

Is Ajax better than Texecom or Pyronix?

Ajax, Texecom and Pyronix are all BS EN 50131 Grade 2 alarm systems suited to UK homes. Ajax is fully wireless with the strongest mobile app on the market and built-in photo verification. Texecom Premier Elite is a hardwired or hybrid panel preferred for large or older properties where cabling already exists. Pyronix Enforcer is a competitively priced wireless system manufactured in Hassocks, West Sussex. SatFocus installs all three. The right choice depends on whether you need wireless flexibility (Ajax), hardwired robustness (Texecom), or budget value (Pyronix).

Can Ajax alarms be installed without internet?

Yes. Ajax Hub 2 Plus and Hub Hybrid include dual SIM 2G/3G/4G as standard, so the system stays online and reports alarms even with no broadband. The Hub 2 (basic model) supports a single 2G/3G SIM as backup to Ethernet. App control still requires a mobile data connection at the hub, but the alarm itself functions without Wi-Fi or broadband.

How long does Ajax battery life last?

Ajax sensor batteries are rated for up to 7 years of operation under normal use. The Hub itself contains a backup battery that provides 16 hours of standby in the event of a mains power failure. The Ajax app sends low-battery warnings approximately 2 months before replacement is needed. SatFocus offers an annual maintenance visit that includes battery checks and firmware updates.

What is the difference between Ajax Hub 2 and Hub 2 Plus?

The Ajax Hub 2 supports up to 100 Jeweller devices, single SIM card, and 50 users. The Hub 2 Plus supports up to 200 devices, dual SIM, Wi-Fi, faster processor, and 100 users. For a typical 2 to 3 bedroom home the Hub 2 is sufficient. Larger homes, multi-occupancy properties, or installations needing photo verification with multiple MotionCam units benefit from the Hub 2 Plus. The price difference is approximately £180 in hardware plus a small labour increase.

Can Ajax replace my existing Verisure or ADT alarm?

Yes. SatFocus regularly replaces Verisure and ADT rental contracts with owned Ajax systems. Verisure and ADT systems are typically locked to their own monitoring contracts (£30–£50 per month). Once you switch to Ajax you own the equipment outright, the app is free for life, and optional 24/7 monitoring through an Alarm Receiving Centre costs roughly £15–£20 per month. The old system is removed and the new Ajax kit is installed in a single visit.

What is Ajax Fibra and when do I need it?

Ajax Fibra is the manufacturer’s hardwired bus protocol, used with the Ajax Hub Hybrid panel. Fibra supports cable runs up to 2,000 metres per branch and up to 100 wired devices on a single hub. It is recommended for commercial properties, new builds where cable can be installed during construction, and any site where tamper resistance and zero radio interference are critical. Most London homes use the wireless Jeweller protocol; Fibra is typically reserved for commercial work or properties over roughly 4,000 sq ft.

Is Ajax compatible with Hikvision or Dahua CCTV?

Yes. Ajax Hub 2 Plus supports up to 25 IP cameras directly through the Ajax app via RTSP. SatFocus regularly integrates Ajax with Hikvision and Dahua CCTV so a single app shows live alarm events alongside camera footage. When an alarm is triggered, the app pulls live video from the nearest camera for instant verification — without paying any monthly fee to Ajax or to the camera manufacturer.

Does Ajax meet UK insurance requirements?

Ajax Hub 2, Hub 2 Plus and Hub Hybrid are certified to BS EN 50131 Grade 2, which is the standard required by most UK home insurers and a significant proportion of commercial policies. SatFocus issues a written compliance certificate after installation that you can supply to your insurer. For higher-risk premises requiring Grade 3 (typically jewellers, gunsmiths, listed building contents), Ajax Hub Hybrid with the appropriate Fibra device set meets the standard.

Can I monitor multiple properties on one Ajax app?

Yes. The Ajax app supports an unlimited number of separate hubs under a single user account. This is ideal for landlords with multiple rentals, parents managing a second home, or business owners with several premises. Each hub can have its own set of users with different access permissions — for example, a cleaner who can disarm only on Tuesdays between 09:00 and 12:00.

How long does Ajax installation take?

A standard wireless Ajax installation in a 3-bedroom London home takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, including site survey, device placement, hub configuration, app setup and customer handover. Larger homes with 8+ devices, MotionCam photo verification or FireProtect 2 fire detection take 6 to 8 hours. Hardwired Ajax Fibra installations are quoted on a per-project basis and typically span 1 to 3 days depending on cable routes.

Do you install Ajax outside Greater London?

Yes. SatFocus installs Ajax across the Home Counties — Surrey, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Essex, Kent and Middlesex — within roughly 50 miles of our Harrow base. We cover Watford, Slough, Uxbridge, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Amersham, Wembley and surrounding postcodes as standard. Travel to areas further out is quoted on a per-project basis.

Is the Ajax app free to use?

Yes. The Ajax Security System app for iOS and Android is completely free, with no monthly subscription. You can arm, disarm, view event history, manage users, configure scenarios and receive push notifications without paying anything to Ajax. Optional 24/7 monitoring through a third-party Alarm Receiving Centre is the only ongoing cost, and is itself optional.

Other alarm brands we install

SatFocus is a multi-brand specialist. If Ajax isn’t the right match for your property, we install the full range of UK Grade 2 alarms.
