Your Old Alarm Is Costing You Protection

A 10-15 year old burglar alarm is an outdated, bell-only system that simply makes noise — it has no way to alert you, the police, or a monitoring centre. Modern smart alarms are completely different: they push instant notifications to your phone, work with your existing sensors, and integrate with smart home and CCTV systems. Most importantly, they comply with current insurance requirements (BS EN 50131 Grade 2).

If your control panel is from Honeywell Accenta, Veritas, Scantronic 9651, ADE, Eaton CA-22, Optima, or Galaxy 8/16/18, you almost certainly have a system that can be upgraded — keeping the existing cabling and most sensors — for a fraction of the cost of a complete rip-and-replace installation.

Time For An Upgrade

Recognise any of these? Your alarm system is past its useful life and may already be failing to protect you.

01

Bell-only system

Your alarm just sounds a siren — no smartphone alerts, no monitoring centre dispatch, no remote check-ins.

02

10+ years old

Sensor lifespans are typically 8-12 years. Battery-backed panels degrade. False alarms become routine.

03

No app control

You can’t arm, disarm, or check status from your phone — you rely on a wall keypad and four-digit codes.

04

Insurance pressure

Insurer asking for BS EN 50131 Grade 2 compliance, NSI/SSAIB certification, or signalling-grade equipment.

05

Frequent false alarms

Pet false-trips, sensor failures, faulty PIRs, or panel “trouble” beeps interrupting daily life.

06

Discontinued parts

Your installer can’t source replacement keypads, expanders, or external sirens — the brand is end-of-life.

07

Sold the property

New owners with no codes, no engineer history, no maintenance contract — a complete reset is needed.

What You Lose, What You Gain

A side-by-side of what a 15-year-old alarm gives you versus what a modern smart alarm system delivers.

Old System (e.g. 2010 Accenta G4)

  • Local siren only — no remote alerts
  • No smartphone control or status checks
  • No event log accessible to homeowner
  • No integration with CCTV or smart home
  • Failing or aged PIR sensors (limited range)
  • 4-digit user codes only — no biometrics
  • Battery-backed RAM that loses settings
  • Often non-compliant with current insurer specs
  • Discontinued — no parts or new features

Upgraded Smart System

  • Push notifications direct to your phone
  • Arm, disarm, and view from anywhere
  • Full event history with timestamps in app
  • Integrates with Hikvision/Ajax CCTV cameras
  • Pet-immune dual-tech PIRs, glass-break, doors
  • Wireless keyfobs, NFC tags, app users
  • Cloud-synced — no settings ever lost
  • BS EN 50131 Grade 2 — insurer-compliant
  • Active brand with ongoing firmware updates

Burglar Alarm Upgrade FAQs

How much does a burglar alarm upgrade cost in London?
A typical home alarm upgrade in London ranges from £395 to £1,195 + VAT depending on what’s being replaced. The Essential tier (panel + keypad + siren, re-using existing sensors) starts from £395. The Recommended tier with smartphone app and 4G signalling starts from £695. Premium full-wireless conversions (Ajax or PowerMaster) start from £1,195. We always confirm pricing after a free site survey — no obligation.
Can I keep my existing wired sensors?
In most cases, yes. If your existing PIRs, door contacts, and glass-break detectors are in good working order and fewer than 8-10 years old, we can wire them directly into a new panel from Texecom, Pyronix, Eaton, or Honeywell. We test each sensor during the survey. If a sensor is faulty or end-of-life, we recommend replacement at modest cost rather than a full re-cable.
Will the upgrade work with my insurance?
Our Recommended and Premium tiers install systems compliant with BS EN 50131 Grade 2, which is what most UK home insurers require. We provide an installation certificate showing compliance. If your insurer specifically requires NSI Gold or SSAIB-certified maintenance, ask us during the survey — we can arrange this through partner contracts.
How long does the upgrade take?
Most home alarm upgrades complete in 4-6 hours on a single day. Larger properties or full wireless conversions can take a full day. We arrive between 8am and 9am, you can stay home or leave us with keys, and we always test the full system with you before leaving.
Do you take over alarms installed by other companies?
Yes, this is one of our specialities. We take over alarm systems from any brand or installer — including Banham, ADT, Verisure, Securitas, and local installers. The takeover process includes a full system test, programming reset, code change, user training, and (if requested) a Takeover & Test Certificate. We can also upgrade compatible older systems while we’re there.
What’s the difference between wired, wireless, and hybrid?
Wired systems (Texecom, Eaton) use cables to connect every sensor — most reliable, longest lifespan, ideal where wiring already exists. Wireless systems (Ajax, Visonic) use radio links between battery-powered devices and the panel — fastest to install, no cable runs, beautiful aesthetics. Hybrid systems (Pyronix, Texecom Premier Elite) accept both — perfect for upgrading wired homes with the option to add wireless devices to extensions or hard-to-cable areas.
Can I monitor my alarm from my phone?
Absolutely. All our Recommended and Premium tiers include a smartphone app: Texecom Connect, Pyronix HomeControl+, Ajax MobileApp, or Visonic PowerManage. From the app you can arm/disarm, view event history, get push notifications on alarms, see system status, and add or remove user PINs — all without a wall keypad.
What about monitored alarms that call the police?
For a fully monitored ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre) service with police response, we install systems that signal to a partner ARC via the SmartCom or HomeControl+ communicator. Monthly monitoring runs from £15-£35/month depending on response level. Note: police response in the UK requires URN (Unique Reference Number) registration and a system that meets BS 8243 — we handle the paperwork.
Do you install commercial alarm upgrades?
Yes — we upgrade commercial alarm systems for offices, retail, restaurants, warehouses, and HMOs across London. Commercial upgrades are scoped individually and often include zone partitioning, multiple keypads, integration with access control, and (for higher-grade systems) NSI/SSAIB-certified installation. Contact us for a commercial site visit.
Do you offer alarm servicing after the upgrade?
Yes. Annual servicing keeps the system in compliance, batteries fresh, and warranty active. Our alarm service plan covers system tests, battery replacement, sensor cleaning, firmware updates, and a free annual call-out, typically £85-£150/year depending on system size.
